Our People, Our Home - Unity through Diversity

20 January 2008 (Sunday)

Open carpark behind Block 51 Old Airport Road Hawker Centre

8.00am to 12.00pm

In conjunction with the celebrations of Family and Community Life, Mountbatten Town Carnival 2008 joins in the festivities where residents celebrate their cultural heritage and their diverse beliefs and traditions with activities to encourage family bonding and community togetherness.

Guest-of-Honour Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, Hosting MP Mr Lim Biow Chuan and Members-of-Parliament of Marine Parade Town will grace the event and join in the celebrations with the Mountbatten residents.

Residents can look forward to a ‘Multi-generation Look-alike Contest’ where families consisting of 3-generations will compete on likeness, family interaction and cohesiveness. As well as a ‘Multi-racial Cooking Competition’ that will have contestants of different cultural backgrounds showcasing their skills and specialty dishes.

One of the highlights of the event is the launch of a new campaign; “Towards a Greener Tomorrow”, which aims to promote awareness and education on the effects of climate change. (Annex A) Initiated by the National Environmental Agency (NEA), this campaign carries the following five messages:

  1. Don’t leave electrical appliances on standby mode. Switch them off.
  2. Use energy-efficient light bulbs.
  3. Keep cool with electric fans
  4. Set air-conditioners at 25°C.
  5. Take public transport.

Another campaign, “Give me a Hi5, for a clean and green environment” initiated by NEA to be launched in all other constituencies in South East District, will also be launched by Hosting MP Mr Lim Biow Chuan. This campaign aims to encourage active residents’ involvement and contributions towards caring for the environment, and ultimately, to achieve a clean and green living environment. This campaign addresses five key environmental issues, namely, littering, dengue, personal hygiene, resource conservation (3Rs) and energy conservation. (Annex B)

Be sure to catch the happenings at the Carnival with other exciting activities such as a treasure hunt, a health screening exercise and the Flowerpot Plate Exchange Project whereby residents are encouraged to bring their flowerpot plates to the event site to exchange for useful collaterals.

The opening ceremony of the PCF Centre at Blk 51 Old Airport Road Hawker Centre, Level 2 will also see the PCF children work their creativity and hands painting a colourful mural inside the centre.
